Overview
Infant and newborn dry lips are a common part of your baby's natural adjustment to life outside the womb. While the skin moisture barrier is still developing, you can alleviate your baby’s dry, chapped lips with hydrating, unscented baby care products and by bathing them using a soap-free baby wash – helping shield their skin from extreme weather conditions.
Key facts:
- In the newborn stage (first four weeks after birth) and infancy stage (whole first year after birth), skin is thinner as the skin moisture barrier reaches full maturity1.
- Typical signs of dry lips in infants include redness, flaking, peeling, or a chapped appearance.
- Chapped lips in infants and newborns can be the result of moisture loss from excessively dry and cold conditions, as well as friction from feeding, over-bathing, or lip-licking and drooling.
- Nourish dry, chapped lips with an unscented, baby-safe balm, limit bathing to two to three times per week with a pH-balanced baby wash, and keep skin protected from harsh weather.
