Cerave Shampoos for Healthy-Looking Hair

Unlike harsh shampoos that strip away natural oils, our formulations are free from phthalates, sulphates, dyes, parabens and fragrance. CeraVe Shampoos utilise a complex of three essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to maintain the scalp’s moisture barrier. ...

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Selecting the correct shampoo depends on your primary scalp concern, specifically whether you are maintaining hydration or treating dandruff.

For normal to dry scalps: Choose the CeraVe Gentle Hydrating Shampoo. This formula is designed for a gentle, daily cleanse that removes buildup without stripping moisture. It is suitable for all hair types and textures and leaves hair feeling soft and manageable.

For flaky or itchy scalps: Choose the CeraVe Anti-Dandruff Hydrating Shampoo or the 2-in-1 Anti-Dandruff Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner.

These are formulated to eliminate up to 100% of visible flakes and relieve itchiness. While the standalone shampoo is ideal for a two-step routine, the 2-in-1 option offers a streamlined solution that cleanses and conditions simultaneously.
  •  Yes, ceramides are highly beneficial for both the hair and the scalp. Ceramides are lipids that comprise approximately 50% of the skin’s natural barrier. When applied via shampoo, they help to restore and reinforce the scalp barrier, preventing transepidermal water loss. Furthermore, studies suggest that using ceramide-enriched products on the scalp can minimise symptoms of dryness, such as itching and flaking, making them an essential ingredient for compromised scalps.

  • The scalp barrier is functionally identical to the skin barrier on the rest of your body; it consists of lipids, ceramides, natural moisturising factors (NMFs) and proteins that protect against external aggressors.  Maintaining this barrier is crucial because a disrupted scalp barrier can lead to dryness, irritation, flaking and dull hair. By using products that support the barrier—specifically those containing ceramides—you help the scalp retain essential moisture and prevent the entry of irritants. This creates a nourishing foundation for hair to grow, ensuring it looks soft and nourished rather than dry or brittle.

  • Sulphate-free' means the formula excludes harsh cleansing agents (surfactants) that can strip natural oils, while 'fragrance-free' means no masking scents or perfumes have been added. If you use shampoos containing sulphates and fragrances, you risk disrupting the scalp’s pH balance and causing contact dermatitis or allergic reactions, particularly if you have sensitive skin. By eliminating these common irritants, CeraVe shampoos provide a safe, non-comedogenic cleanse that maintains the integrity of the scalp moisture barrier and reduces the risk of irritation.
  • To establish a robust scalp care routine:

    1. Assess your hair type and lifestyle (e.g., oil production, exercise frequency).
    2. Generally, wash your hair 1–2 times a week, or more frequently if required by your specific hair texture.
    3. If using the CeraVe Anti-Dandruff Hydrating Shampoo, use it twice a week or as directed by a healthcare professional for best results.
    4. Always follow with a hydrating conditioner (unless using the 2-in-1) to lock in moisture.
