What does CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm do?
CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm is a skin barrier ointment formulated to repair, moisturise, and protect dry and rough skin on the face, lips, and body. Its key ingredient, petrolatum, creates a protective layer over the skin's surface that locks in moisture and shields the skin from harsh environmental aggressors for up to eight hours. Combined with three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid, the balm works to restore the skin's natural moisture barrier, providing immediate soothing relief and lasting protection. It also contains panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) and vitamin E to further support skin repair and comfort. The formula is fragrance-free, lanolin-free, alcohol-free, and hypoallergenic. -
Who should use CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm?
CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm is suitable for all skin types, including dry skin, sensitive skin, and mild eczema-prone skin. Its rich, protective formula is particularly beneficial for those experiencing very dry, cracked, or rough skin on areas such as the lips, hands, elbows, feet, or anywhere on the body that needs intensive repair. It is also gentle enough to be used on babies from one month of age, but only on the nappy area. If using on children or those with a diagnosed skin condition, consult a dermatologist before introducing the product. -
What are the key ingredients in CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm?
The base of the formula is petrolatum — a highly effective occlusive ingredient that forms a physical barrier over the skin to prevent moisture loss and protect against irritants. Three essential ceramides (ceramide NP, ceramide AP, and ceramide EOP) help to restore and maintain the skin's natural protective barrier, which is often disrupted in very dry or eczema-prone skin. Hyaluronic acid (as sodium hyaluronate) helps to attract and retain moisture, while panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) provides extra support. The formula also includes tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E) for its antioxidant properties. It is free from fragrance, lanolin, and alcohol. -
How do I use CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm in my routine?
Apply CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm to the face, lips, and body as needed, avoiding direct contact with the eyes. It is designed to be used as a final protective step after your regular moisturiser. For the face, apply it after your PM Facial Moisturising Lotion in the evening, or after your AM Facial Moisturising Lotion with SPF in the morning for particularly dry or compromised skin. For the body, apply it after CeraVe Moisturising Cream or Lotion on slightly damp skin to help seal in moisture. It can be used on very dry or rough-feeling skin areas such as elbows, knees, hands, feet, and lips whenever needed. -
Is CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm the same as a Vaseline or petroleum jelly product?
CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm contains petrolatum as its primary occlusive ingredient — the same ingredient found in standard petroleum jelly products such as Vaseline. However, the CeraVe formula is significantly enhanced with additional skin-supporting ingredients including three essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and panthenol, which work to actively restore and maintain the skin's natural barrier rather than simply sealing the skin's surface. The result is a balm that provides the protective benefits of petrolatum alongside the barrier-repairing and hydrating benefits of CeraVe's ceramide-rich formulation. -
Is CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm suitable for use on eczema-prone skin?
Yes. CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm is suitable for mild eczema-prone skin. Its formula is free from fragrance, lanolin, and alcohol — all common triggers for eczema flares — and is hypoallergenic and developed with dermatologists. The inclusion of three essential ceramides helps to address the depleted ceramide levels often associated with eczema-prone skin, supporting barrier function and reducing transepidermal water loss. While it is not a treatment for eczema, it can help to protect and soothe compromised skin. For moderate to severe eczema, consult a dermatologist for appropriate medical treatment. -
Can I use CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm on my lips?
Yes. CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm is specifically designed for use on the face, lips, and body. Its petrolatum-based formula creates an effective barrier on the lips to protect against dryness and environmental exposure, making it a versatile option for very dry or chapped lips. The fragrance-free, alcohol-free formula means it is gentle enough for the sensitive skin of the lips. Apply as needed throughout the day and before bed for overnight lip care. -
What is the difference between CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm and CeraVe Moisturising Cream?
Both products are designed for dry skin, but they serve different purposes. CeraVe Moisturising Cream is a hydrating cream-based moisturiser best used as a daily body moisturiser for dry to very dry skin — it is lighter in texture and provides long-lasting hydration through MVE Delivery Technology. CeraVe Advanced Repair Balm, on the other hand, is a thicker, ointment-style balm based on petrolatum, designed to provide an intensive protective barrier and immediate soothing relief for severely dry, cracked, or compromised skin. The balm is best used as a final targeted step on specific problem areas, while the moisturising cream is more suited to broader daily hydration across the face and body.
