FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Hand creams play a role in strengthening the skin’s protective moisture barrier to maintain the skin’s condition, but also work to moisturise and soften to prevent dryness, cracking and premature ageing. Regular use of a hand cream can:

    • Protect the hands against environmental aggressors and irritants

    • Help soften rough or cracked hands

    • Provides intense moisture and hydration to the skin

    • Smooth skin texture and soften rough skin

    • Visibly reduce skin ageing on the hands

    • Relieve and comfort irritated skin

    • Prevents dryness and flakiness

    • Restore a compromised moisture barrier from overwashing

    • Hydrate and strengthen the nails

  • The hands benefit from richer formulas containing ingredients that attract and seal in moisture. For a daily hand cream, look to emollients like shea or cocoa butter, as well as humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, all key ingredients to supporting skin hydration. To provide intense moisture to very dry or cracked skin, beeswax and petrolatum are good for creating a protective barrier to prevent water loss. Lastly, a good hand cream should always include skin-identical ceramides to keep the skin feeling smooth, soft and protected.

  • Hand creams, balms and lotions all function to moisturise the skin, but they may vary in consistencies and textures. A hand lotion tends to be a much lighter formula than a hand cream, which means it absorbs quickly but may not be as deeply nourishing as a cream. Hand balms are slightly richer than a cream, containing more occlusive ingredients (petrolatum or beeswax) that work as a protective film to prevent water loss and protect against harsh weather conditions

  • If you have dry hands, look for richer formulas containing emollients like shea butter, cocoa butter or colloidal oatmeal, as well as humectants like hyaluronic acid, urea, and glycerin. As dry skin is more prone to having a compromised moisture barrier, you should also look for skin-identical lipids (including ceramides) that help to strengthen and restore the skin’s protective function. The Reparative Hand Balm is ideal for providing intense moisture to extremely dry skin on the hands.
